ALSO program (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) organizes hands-on courses that help healthcare professionals to manage obstetric emergencies. The program also organizes “train the trainers” courses, trainers’ scientific meetings before starting each seminar, round tables or even courses as part of international and Greek congresses.
ALSO program and its courses began in USA in 1991. They are designed to meet the needs of thousands of health professionals who may need to respond to obstetric emergencies and they are organized by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The Greek ALSO program was initiated at 2002 and is regularly organized in Greece and Cyprus by the Hellenic Society of Obstetric and Gynecological Emergency.
ALSO goal is for participants to successfully complete the course and become able to manage emergencies during pregnancy, labour and after birth.
The course lasts 2 days and benefits those who care mothers and their newborns. It includes lectures, case discussions, counseling simulations, video projections and hands-on exercises on mannequins and muscle tissue. It also uses mnemonic rules (acronyms / algorithms) that actually “rescue” on obstetric emergencies.
The seminar ends with an optional written and oral examination. The American Academy Certificate is awarded to those who manage to pass both examinations, where the others receive a certificate of attendance.
Instructors who teach at ALSO courses are not paid for the time they spend.
